Chevalier Microscope van Leest Antiques (8)

Arthur Chevalier microscope in original case circa 1865   This is a rare and important large microscope by Arthur Chevalier. It is signed on the tube “Dr Arthur Chevalier, Palais Royal 158, Paris". The retailer was H. Olland, Utrecht who started with the business in 1853

The microscope comes with three objectives and their brass canisters. Optics consist of three eyepieces numbered 1, 2 and 3 with a square stage. The condenser assembly is mounted on a vertically sliding mechanism that allows it to be easily lowered, and below that is a four-position aperture wheel. Focus is via a screw and spring mechanism internal to the main vertical support pillar. The illuminating mirror is mounted to an elaborate articulating arm. The microscope and stage assembly is supported via a compass joint by one pillars which themselves are mounted to a massive brass base. Accessories include three brass rods of an unknown function, a brass support for the bull's eye lens, a plane glass slide. The microscope and accessories can be stored in the included mahogany case.

Charles Chevalier (1804-1859) began working with his father, Vincent (1770-1841), after completing his apprenticeship (1819-1821) in the mechanical workshop of a certain Godelar. In 1832 the partnership was bitterly dissolved and Charles left his father to found his own firm at the Palais Royal, 163, Galerie de Valois. After Charles Chevalier and his wife signed an agreement on the 5th of April 1849 to rent a shop at the Palais Royal No. 158, their shop moved from No. 163 to 158 in the same Galerie. In 1842, Charles Chevalier published his first and only catalogue describing his microscopes.

Gigli2

A very good example of an American Civil War era gigli amputation saw with checkered ebony handles. Used by a surgeon to cut through bone , often in a situation where the use of a conventional saw would have been awkward. The chain links, sharp on one side smooth on the other made a smooth cut.  Length of chain without handles: 12.5"  or 31.25 cm approx. There is no maker's mark on the handles allowing this saw to be used as replacement in amputation set by virtually any maker.

Queen8

Described in the Queen & Co 1890 microscope catalog as:  "ACME MICROSCOPE No. 3, NEW MODEL". The description notes: "This is an instrument which we can recommend as well adapted for work of even the very highest grade, as for example, bacteriological investigations ...." The example on offer has good optics and a superb original lacquer finish, which the images barely do justice to. The iris diaphragm is not present, the rotating stage is a bit stiff and the case lacks a cover.

A very special-shaped and handcrafted French inclinometer combining a nice brass protractor, a brass stand with round base and a long needle with decorative screw.

An incliometer, or clinometer, was used in sureying for measuring slopes and/or vertical angles, on gunnery for measuring elevation of canons, and in mining for the gradient in tunnel excavation.

The present example, crafted around 1800, is based on the design of some early examples (circa 1600) built only with a simple round scale and needle/plumb bob. To move, the needle have to be a little bit unscrew (see pictures).

Furthermore, the present example can be fixed on another instruments throught two small holes on the base.

The first owner who requested or built the clinometer have signed his instrument "M Guillou". This very common name don't allow a sure attribution.

An elegant and rare form of a simple French inclinometer.

Size : 14,5x12cm

Galloway_Barograph_1 copy

Image of Drum Barograph by GallowayThe drum barograph mechanism overall of grained and lacquered brass. The fully enclosed drum marked "7D" (seven day movement), captive winding key and regulator, securing nut, sprung side-mounted chart retainer with fixing clip, cover, the whole raised upon a chassis-mounted turned-steel spindle with sun gear to base. The barometer driven by twin 2¾" horizontally-mounted capsules tensioned by a nickel plated 'C' spring, heavy machined brass top lever with compensation adjustment wheel to side, bi-metallic temperature compensating connecting lever. Twin pivot shafts raised on barrel-form columns with grained white metal recorder arm and screw tension adjustment, blued-steel top screws and pivots. The full chassis annotated "Mark II" and "Reg No 554620," fitted with arrestor bar and lever, mercurial thermometer set on a silvered brass back plate with scales in degrees Celsius and Fahrenheit, ink bottle holder with cobalt blue ink bottle, corked dipper.

The end-hinged polished mahogany case set on bracket feet with twin swinging catches, decorative gilt brass carrying handle, frieze chart drawer below and maker's plate.

This drum barograph is unusual in that the aneroid barometer closely follows designs employed in pocket, marine and bulkhead types, the capsules held in tension by a 'C' spring and acting through a heavy top lever. Well-constructed, the instrument shows good sensitivity and function. It has been disassembled, cleaned and checked, and remains in original condition in all respects. The ink bottle, though of the same period, is not original to the item.
