An unpublished manuscript, very richly illustrated, given the summary, for the Baccalaureat es Sciences in 1860 in France, of all the basis/cornestones about Scientific Instruments and their uses, astronomy, cartography, surveying, dialling and astrophysics.

"Cosmographie", 4to (25x20 cm), [2] and 512 pages ; contemporary black half-leather.

Even if the general title is "Cosmographie" the manuscript deals with several differents subjects :

-pages 5-181 : scientific instruments with 96 drawings ;

-pages 185-260 : measurements of the movements of the earth and measurement of the position of the stars with 28 drawings

-pages 261-308 : description of the celestial chart and stars with 25 drawing and a celestial charts in two parts drawn and handcolored.

-pages 309-371 : earth : form, movment, longitude, latitude, meridian and measurements of its movements with 25 drawings

-pages 372-412 : geographic maps : different projection, how to draw maps, etc with 30 drawings ;

-pages 413-444 : Earth atmosphere with 5 drawings

-pages 445-497 : the description of the sun (diameter, movements, composition, solar time) with 13 drawings

-pages 497-512 : dialling with 9 drawings

The manuscript seems unfinished and the spine bear the number "1" but the manuscript is complete in itself and forms a closed and unified set. We can suppose that the number "2" never existed.

This manuscript was wrote for the programm of the Baccaulaureat es Sciences in 1860. So we can suppose that, either it's a project for a new publications, either it's the personnal manuscript of a professor for the preparation of his courses.

But the hypothesis of a project for a new publication/textbook for student is more probable.

As, we can see with the pictures, the part concerning the stars and the celestial chart is very innovative in its presentation with separate illustrations of all major constellations : the writter cut a printed celestial maps and drawn on it with different colors the different constellations.

An unpublished manuscript based on the publications of the time and copying some usual/classic illustration, and a great and very scarce work illustrated large and nice original drawings of scientific instruments. I don't know other similar so richly illustrated about scientific instrument.

An important and fine manuscript work.

Important and rare enlarged second edition of Bedos de Celle's Gnomonique Pratique, published in 1774 after the first published in 1755/1760, that we can consider as the best French textbook about portable existing sundials from the 18th century.

The second edition is enlarged with 4 new important plates showing the famous astronomical ring of Duc de Luynes built by Baradelle and a large high precision sundial signed also by Baradelle.

Already present in the first edition, the other plates shown a portable sundial signed by Guibout, a portable shepherd/pillar sundial, a large horizontal/octogonal sundial, a portable analemmanic sundial, etc.

Inside very clean and plates whitout any tear, very rare in such fine condition especially because all plate are folding.

BEDOS DE CELLES (François), La gnomonique pratique, ou l’art de tracer les cadrans solaires, Paris, Delalain, 1774

8vo (19,5x12cm), frontispiece, XL, 510 pages, 38 folding plates and 1 large folding map of France ; contemporary calf (first joint cracked but still solid, soma lack of leather at the spine).

Very fine general condition.

A very fine example in it’s original wooden box of a complete ether’s inhaler, invented by Ombredanne in 1908, for anesthesia and here improved and signed by Luer, circa 1920.

The inhaler comes with its original bladder in perfect condition, its original mask, an additional small and angled piece to hold the mask farthest from the inhaler, and its original felt to absorb ether.

The inhaler is mechanically in perfect condition.

The Luer Ombredanne-type ether’s inhalers are rare.

It's interesting to note that, as Collin had patented the original round Ombredanne inhaler, the others instrumentmakers in medicine and surgery seems to have developped several modified forms for offering for sale in the same time that the Collin Ombredanne inhaler.

See, my Drapier, listed few month ago and now sold :

Despite the fact that the wooden box had formely xylophagous animals but it has been treated, a very attractive example.

Box : 27x17x13 cm.

Letter from Peter Guthrie Tait to J.P.Joule, making reference to Kelvin 1863

A significant letter from noted Scottish mathematical physicist Peter Guthrie Tait (1831-1901), for the urgent attention of James Prescott Joule, requesting clarification on a matter concerning Joule's experiments on the mechanical value of heat, probably for a reference to be written up in Guthrie Tait and William Thomson's "Treatise on Natural Philosophy" (1867). There is a clear mistrust and disdain for information received from Thomson (later, Lord Kelvin) - "so we have got some more "mud" from T".

auricles1b

A scarce and elegant pair of  silver-gilt auricles ( aka: mini ear trumpets). There is a set screw on each that allows the length of the shaft and angle of the trumpet bell to be adjusted to suit the needs of the user--see 4th image. The bell of each is struck with an indecipherable maker's mark and  twice with the crab, a mark used after 1838 in France for small objects fabricated from 800 silver  Sterling is 925 silver and was and is widely used in the UK and the USA. On the continent  800 silver was and is more commonly used.  The gilding on the auricles has taken on a warm and mellow patina over the years.

AVIATORS ALTIMETER BY NEGRETTI & ZAMBRA c1910

aviators_altimeter_negretti_zambra_3-copy

Aviators altimeter having silvered brass 5¼" dual concentric dials, the inner calibrated with a range 28-31 inches of mercury, further annotated "Compensated," "Inches," and with maker’s legend "Negretti & Zambra, London." The outer rotating dial annotated in feet, boldly marked in one hundreds of feet with stations at 1, 2 and 3000ft. Broad blued-steel pointer set beneath a fine ground, optical quality bevelled glass, the bezel with fine cut knurling to circumference. The two-inch deep parallel cast and machined case with side-mounted bracket and bezel stop. First quality twin 2½" diameter capsule movement having bi-metallic compensation and constructed upon an aluminium chassis. The whole retained within its original leather case by three aluminum fixing screws to rear (one screw present but a/f). The leather case lacking some loops, and with plaited leather cord with copper fixings (later). The aluminum instrument case with some surface oxidation and minor abrasions, the glass with minor scratches, the dial with some localized oxidation.

This antique barometric aviators altimeter was obtained by us in essentially untouched condition. It has been disassembled, checked, cleaned, conserved and reassembled. It is offered here in absolutely original condition and its function and sensitivity are excellent.

This is a highly significant aneroid instrument, made to exacting standards solely for theImage of Early AVRO Plane purposes of aviation, almost certainly a pre-production piece or very early production item since it lacks a serial number. The date of manufacture must be estimated based on the improving performance of aircraft. The Wright brothers first flew on the 17th December 1903, and on the 7th January 1910 a French aviator, Hubert Latham, achieved a world record altitude of 3,281ft. Balloonists had achieved an altitude of 24,000ft in 1803, long before Vidie’s patent of 1845 made this instrument possible.

The leather case originally had four circumferentially spaced fixing points, as detailed.  At some point they have been removed, but they would have been pick up points for mounting wires or springs, a system of suspension within the framework of the aircraft and designed to position the instrument for easy viewing by the pilot and to reduce vibration generated by the engine. The bezel may be rotated and locked into position setting the Zero marker at the pointer prior to take off, thus giving an accurate altitude over field height.

Since numbers of aircraft at this time were minimal, production of these early altimeters would have been very few indeed - owing to the complete lack of information in this regard one can only work on conjecture. Apart from one example dated 1914, that reads to 7,000ft and is of a different design (and that is itself a very rare instrument), we have been unable to find any similar examples by this top maker, Negretti & Zambra, and instruments by other makers from this period are very seldom encountered. This aviators altimeter represents a moment in time when technology, engineering and science, married to the great pioneers in aviation, forever changed the world.
